2(-1) + a(-1) - 7 > -12
-2 - a - 7 > -12
-2 - 7 - a > -12
-9 - a > -12
+ 9 + 9
-a > -3
-1 -1
a > 3

in the equation plug in x that is -1
2(-1) + a(-1) -7 > -12
-2 -a -7 > -12
+2 +2
-a -7 > -10
+7 +7
-a > -3
divide by -1
a < 3
remember when ever you multiply or divide by a negative number flip the sign
