The Organization of American States (OAS) was founded on April 30, 1948, in Bogota, Colombia. Back then, 21 countries signed the initial charter, most of them from Latin America. The OAS prolonged the alliance between the United States and several Latin American countries in the Rio Treaty in 1947, to build an intra-hemispheric program for economic, political, and social relationships.

Today, all the 35 independent nations of the Americas are part of the OAS.
