A collection of dimes and nickels is worth $6.90. There are 96 coins in all.

How many of each coin are there?

LET X= NICKELS 96-X= DIMES MULTIPLY EACH NY THEIR MONETARY VALUE 5X+10(95-X)= 690 5X+960-10X= 690 -5X+960= 690 -5X= -270 X= 54 96-54= 42 ANSWER 54 NICKELS 42 DIMES HOPE THIS HELPS

Nickels=54
Dimes=42

Considering that: 1 Nickel = $0.05 and 1 Dime =$0.1 you can write two equations:
0.05N+0.1D=6.9
N+D=96
Where N is the number of Nickels and D the number of Dimes.
Solving the system formed by the two equations (for substitution, for example) you get your result.
