A character can be described either directly or indirectly. When a character is developed directly, the author provides a description of the character using adjectives. On the other hand, indirect characterization occurs when an author develops a character by showing his or her actions, thoughts, emotions, etc. and lets the readers reach their own conclusions.

It is in general true that a character can be portrayed by direct exposition, but it should be noted that a character can be portrayed in any way that the author wishes.
