Sandra is making a large delivery in an apartment building. The maximum weight that the building's elevator can support is 3,200 lbs. If Sandra weighs 145 lb and each box that she is delivering weighs 51 lb, then what is the maximum number of boxes can she ride up with in the elevator?

Answer:

the maximum number of boxes she can bring at one time is 59 boxes

Explanation:

59 x 51 = 3009 + 145 = 3154

equation = x = 145 + (51 x 59)

x = the weight of the boxes and Sandra

She can ride up with 59 boxes.

Step 1. Subtract Sandra’s weight from the maximum weight. 3,200-145=3,055

Step two. Divide the weight of the boxes by 3,055. 3,055/51=59.9019608

Since she can’t carry .9 of a box, and 60 boxes would be over the maximum weight capacity, Sandra can only ride up with 59 boxes in the elevator.
