we can write the 2 numbers as a and b
we have
a-b= 9
a+b=17
we will solve the equations by adding them both and we get
2a=26, therefore a= 26/2=13

substitute in any equation and you will get 13+ ? = 17, so b= 4
a=13, b= 4
