When Jody realizes Flag keeps eating the crops and will have to be killed, this was the tension that reached its peak in the novel.

"
D. Jody realizes Flag keeps eating the crops and will have to be killed" is the best option for when the tension reaches its peak in this particular novel, although there are other tension-filled moments as well.
