First, what you need to do is to add up these two numbers in the ratio, which gives you this:1+4=5.
Step 2 divide 50 with number 5
Step 3 the result is 10
Step 4 1:4=1·10:4·10
Step 5 1:4=10:40

don't know how to type the symbole infront of the 50 so I will subsitute
£50=$50
so 1:4
add it up
1+4=5
so 5 total units
$50=5 units
divide by 5
$10=1 unit
so 1:4=10:10 times 4=10:40
the answer is 10:40
