Basketball shoes are on sale for 22% off. What is the regular price if the sale price is $42?

100%-22%=78%, so $42 must be 78% of the original price. The easiest way I can think of to solve this is to use cross products:
(pretend these are fractions:)
sale percent
= 78% = $42
whole percent 100% $x

78x=4200
x=4200/78
x=$53.85 (rounded to the nearest penny)
