To determine how much money will Mr. Townsend spend on fabric for the butterfly wings, the first step is to calculate the amount of fabric needed.

You know that for each pair of wings, he needs 3/4 yard of fabric. To determine the total amount of fabric needed you have to multiply the number of pairs of wings he is going to make by the amount of fabric needed for each pair.

He needs to make 13 pairs of wings then:

13\cdot(3)/(4)=(39)/(4)=9.75yd

For the 13 pairs of wings, he will need 9.75 yards of fabric.

If you know that the fabric costs $8 per yard, to determine how much he will spend you have to multiply the price by the amount of fabric needed:

8\cdot9.75=78

He will spend $78 to make the 13 pairs of wings for the butterfly costumes.
