5x - 1/4 = 3x - 5/4
5x - 3x
2x - 1/4 = -5/4
2x = -5/4 + 1/4
2x = -1
2x/2 = -1/2
x = -1/2

subtract 3x from 5x getting 2x so your new equation is: 2x-1/4=-5/4 then you add 1/4 to -5/4 getting : 2x=-1 the you divide both sides by 2 so x=-1/2
