Rough Riders was the nickname given to the members of the 1st Volunteer Cavalry in the Spanish-American War. They were volunteers recruited by Theodore Roosevelt and composed of cowboys , miners, law-enforcement officials and colleges athletes, among others. This group joined in the capture of Kettle Hill, then charged across a valley to assist the seizure of San Juan Ridge , the highest point of San Juan Hill.
