Four more than the product of five and a number yields fourteen
Well, we know that we need a variable, and that the equation has to be set to equal fourteen.
Four more means that we're adding four to the equation, as well, so it will look like this:
4 + 5x = 14 where x is the unknown number being multiplied by five.
Now, we just solve it.
4 + 5x = 14
4 + 5x - 4 = 14 - 4
5x = 10
5x ÷ 5 = 10 ÷ 5
x=2
The unknown number is 2.
To check it, we plug it into the equation.
4 + (5 × 2) = 14
4 + (10) = 14
14=14
So, yes, the unknown number is definitely 2.
