Pope Alexander VI authored the Treaty of Tordesillas, which was signed in 1494. This treaty was designed to ease tensions between Castille and Portugal - two nations set on colonizing the New World. The treaty set up a line granting Castille everything to the west (today - Mexico, Cuba, Peru, the American Southwest) and Portugal everything to the east (today - Brazil).
