Representative democracy refers to the concept that officials are elected by constituents to represent the constituents.  The elected officials make decisions on behalf of the people they are representing.  This is contrasts with a direct democracy in which all citizens participate in every part of the decision making process. The United States today has a representative democracy today.

Representative democracy is a democracy that is based on representatives being elected by the people. And these elected representatives have the power of electing other representatives, etc.

This form of government is followed in United Kingdom and even Germany.
