Liquid crude oil and petroleum are made from small marine organisms .
The formation of crude oil and petroleum took place millions of years ago when
small marine organisms
such as planktons died and sank to the bottom of the ocean and got buried under layers of sediments.
Under the conditions of
high temperature, pressure and an absence of oxygen
the organic matter derived from these small organisms got converted to the present day petroleum and crude oil.
