y - 3x = -2 ⇒ 2y - 6x = -4
y + x = -6 ⇒ 2y + 2x = -12
-8x = 8
-8 -8
x = -1
y - 3(-1) = -2
y + 3 = -2
-3 -3
y = -5
(x, y) = (-1, -5)

Rearranging the first equation gives:

y=3x-2

Substituting this into the other equation gives:

y+x=-6 \\(3x-2)+x=-6 \\4x-2=-6 \\4x=-4 \\x=-1

If x=-1:

y+(-1)=-6 \\y=-5

So x=-1, y=-5
