A = lw + lw
A = ((12)(6) + (2)(6))
A = 72 + 12
A = 84in²

Step 1-- Break up the figure into smaller parts.

Step 2-- Find the area of each part.

Figure 1: A = length (base) × width (height)
A = l× w
A = 6*6
A = 36 sq inch

Figure 2:

A = length (base) × width (height)
A = l× w
A = 6*8
A = 48 sq inch

Step 3 Add the areas.
The area is 36 +48 or 84 square inches
