What does it mean to say we understand many chemical reactions as transfers of electrons

In most chemical reactions there is an exchange or shift of electrons from one or more atoms to another. The number of electrons given up or shared depends on the type of bond, but the loss or gain of electron(s) is a major part of chemical reactivity.
