New York City is an Urban community. This is explained by the many high rises, corporate offices which have their headquarters, and the existence of a business and commercial district within the city. Suburban is generally on the outskirts of the city and has a lower residential population less than a million. Rural is primarily agrarian communities. New York city is a metropolis which has a population of more than 1 million and is a commercial hub, hence it is called an Urban area.
