The area of the shaded region will be the area of the big rectangle minus the area of the small rectanlge. That is:

A_S=A_(BR)-A_(SR)

The area of a rectangle is given by:

A=wl

Then, plugging the value of each rectangle in the first equation we have:

\begin{gathered} A_S=(5)(4)-(3)(3) \\ =20-9 \\ =11 \end{gathered}

Therefore, the area of the shaded region is 11 sq in.
