How did the patriots and loyalists feel about the war for independence

1/3 of the colonist were for the war, 1/3 were against the war, 1/3 were neutral. That was John Adams' estimation. It is very likely that the Middle Third's sympathies shifted throughout the war depending on who seemed to be winning at the time.

Patriots wanted to break away from the Mother Country (England), and wanted to be dependent. They wanted nothing to do with England or the kings.

The Loyalists wanted to remain in America, but stay loyal to England and let them continue to rule over the colonists.
