So for example, writing [a,b] means
a \le x \le b

Another example: writing (a, b] means
a < x \le b

The set notation is practically identical to the inequality notation. All that's new is the use of surrounding curly braces, and the x | up front. In my opinion, the third column seems a bit redundant.
