In the expression d-12, you understand that you are subtracting the value of 12 from any value of d
So if you have a greater value of d and you subtracted 12, you would be left with a greater value.
From the number line and your theory of numbers you know 46>42, therefore subtracting 12 from 46 will give a greater value.
