Let's call the mystery number x.
Start off with multiplying x by 5.
Your equation so far is 5x.
Next we subtract 27
5x - 27
Our solution is 83
5x - 27 = 83
Add 27 to both sides
5x = 110
Divide both sides by 5
x = 22
