Speed of a computer depends on both the processor and RAM but RAM mostly decides how much multitasking a computer can do and processor decides how efficiently it can do.
If the RAM is high, you can run more programs at a time smoothly, the computer won't hang. And if the processor is more advanced, then it will run the programs smoothly whichever program is running.
So mostly it is processor which decides the speed of a computer but if it has less RAM, even if it has a good processor, it won't run so smoothly.

If you upgrade the Processor, that will make your computer faster. RAM is where programs are stored while they are being used. The more RAM you have, the more programs you can run at once. The only way to make your computer faster is to remove all those nasty viruses or upgrade the processor.
