If you distribute the 2 on the left you end up with

6y-8=10

then add 8 to both sides

6y=18

then divide by 6 on both sides

y=3

and if you plug it back in it should equal 10

2((3)(3)-4)=10

10=10

2(3y-4)=10\ \ \ |divide\ both\ sides\ by\ 2\\\\(2(3y-4))/(2)=(10)/(2)\\\\3y-4=5\ \ \ \ \ |add\ 4\ to\ both\ sides\\\\3y=9\ \ \ \ \ |divide\ both\ sides\ by\ 3\\\\\boxed{y=3}
