To figure out k you have to take away 17 from both sides and then you will be left with only 37 because 54-17=37 so then on the other side you'd be left with k=37 which is therefore your answer

when you do the inverse operation which in this case would be subtraction you do 54-17 and then you do 17 minus 17 which leaves you with the variable 54-17=34 so k=34
