Final answer:

Understanding density is important because it helps identify substances, determine unknown mass or volume, and provides insights into the phase of matter and its substructure.

Step-by-step explanation:

Density is an important characteristic of substances. It is crucial, for example, in determining whether an object sinks or floats in a fluid. Density is the mass per unit volume of a substance or object. Understanding density is important because it helps identify substances, determine unknown mass or volume, and provides insights into the phase of matter and its substructure.

Density applies to many if not all aspects of life.  With density you can explain why ice floats.   You can explain why oxygen is on the earth, and not floating around in space( or being replaced by another gas).  You can also explain why heat rises while cold air sinks.
