Given the 2 equations

- 2x + y = 10 → (1)

y = -
(1)/(3) x + 3 → (2)

Substitute (2) into (1), that is

- 2x -
(1)/(3) x + 3 = 10 ( multiply through by 3 to clear the fraction )

- 6x - x + 9 = 30

- 7x + 9 = 30 ( subtract 9 from both sides )

- 7x = 21 ( divide both sides by - 7 )

x = - 3

Substitute x = - 3 into (2) for corresponding value of y

y = -
(1)/(3) (- 3) + 3 = 1 + 3 = 4

solution is x = - 3, y = 4
