First, you add like terms. In this case, the like terms are 6 and 3.
4x + 6 + 3 = 17
4x + 9 = 17
Then, subtract 9 on each side:
4x + 9 - 9 = 17 - 9
4x = 8
Then divide by 4 on each side to get the x by itself:
4x/4 = 8/4
x = 2
