There was ample amount of Gold which was found in Ghana so because of that it was Gold which helped Ghana to become an Empire.

Further Explanation:-

The Ghana became empire under the rule of Wogadou and Ghana was the first African Empire. The trade of salt and god had existed in Ghana from many centuries but the introduction of Camel as the source of Gold export opened gates for Ghana Globally and it changed Ghana completely. The Empire of Ghana further flourished as introduction of Camels increased Trans-Sahara trade of Gold which allowed many more urban centers to develop. Because of Gold and Salt traded through Ghana to the other countries, Ghana became very wealthy country as they taxed the goods which came through tax centers. Ghana also had large military force and because of that it charged its people in order to provide them protection if people desired to get any protection from the government. Ghana also protected its trade routes and that encouraged many merchants to come to Ghana for Trade.

Empire of Ghana was eventually attacked by other regions who were in find of the resources that Ghana had and this brought downfall of Ghana and because of that Ghana had to merge with Mali which at last became one of the most Richest Empire in Africa.

The empire grew rich from the trans-Saharan trade in gold and salt. This trade produced an increasing surplus, allowing for larger urban centers. It also encouraged territorial expansion to gain control over the lucrative trade routes. Hope this answers the question.
