One of the important changes that took place in the art world after the Reformation was the rejection of expressions of idolatry, especially in sculpture and great paintings. Likewise there was a change in the illustrations of the books, they were smaller and more private.

The art that focused on the representation of Christian life followed the Protestant theory seeking to represent stories that would show salvation through divine grace instead of personal works or through the intervention of ecclesiastical bureaucracy.

The Protestant Reformation during the 16th century in Europe almost entirely rejected the existing tradition of Catholic art, and very often destroyed as much of it as it could reach. A new artistic tradition developed, producing far smaller quantities of art that followedProtestant agendas and diverged drastically from the southern European tradition and the humanist art produced during the High Renaissance.
