What is the value of y in the solution to the following system of equations?

2x + y = −4
5x + 3y = −6

For the answer to the question above,
2x+ y = -4 5x + 3y = -6
y= -4 -2x

substitute y=-4-2x into 5x+3y=-6
5x + 3(-4-2x) = -6
5x -12 -6x =-6
-x=6
x=-6

sub x=-6 into 2x+y=-4
-12 + y = -4
y=8

x=-6 and y=8
