Let's simplify each number to tens and units
16 = 10 + 6
34 = 30 + 4
16 * 34 = (10 + 6)(30 + 4)
= 10 * 30 + 10 * 4 + 6 * 30 + 6 * 4
= 300 + 40 + 180 + 24
= 544
