First pattern

The number of squares in the first term is 3

The second term is 5

The third term is 7

So this pattern increased by 2

The rule of any pattern increased by a constant number is

y = a + (x-1)d, where

a is the first term

d is the constant difference

x is the position of the term

So a = 3

and d = 2

The equation is

y = 3 + (x - 1)2

Multiply 2 by the bracket

y = 3 + 2x - 2

Add the like terms

y = 2x + 1
