tom drives 200 miles in 4 hour. he drives the first 32 miles at an average speed of 64mph. work out his average sped for the rest of the journey

We use the following relation to solve this question:


v = (d)/(t)

In which v is the velocity, d is the distance and t is the time.

First 32 miles at an average speed of 64mph.

So the time for these 32 miles is:


64 = (32)/(t)


64t = 32


t = (32)/(64)


t = 0.5

Rest of the trip:

200 - 32 = 168 miles in 4 - 0.5 = 3.5 hours. So the average speed is of:


v = (d)/(t) = (168)/(3.5) = 48

His average speed for the rest of the journey was of 48mph.
