Here we have a triangle rectangle, remember the Pythagorean theorem.

if c is the hypotenuse, and a and b are the cathetus of a triangle rectangle, then we have:

a^2 + b^2 = c^2

For the first triangle we know that:

a = 4, b = 4

Then:

(4)^2 + (4)^2 = c^2

16 + 16 = c^2

32 = c^2

√32 = c

Now in the second image we want to find the value of a, such that:

c = 16, b = 19

Now we can replace these in the equation:

a^2 + b^2 = c^2

a^2 + 9^2 = 16^2

a^2 = 16^2 - 9^2 = 175

a = √175
