one would be 1 1/2 + 1 1/2

1 1/4 + 1 3/4 = 3.

That's because 1/4 + 3/4 = 4/4, which equals 1.

1 + 1 = 2.

Now add the 1 from the 4/4 to the 2, and you get 3.
