For starters, the same thing happened that happened in the Northern parts of America. Settlers came and with diseases killed many people by accident. The place was easily colonized and when France took it over from Spain later on, they brough numerous slaves that drastically increased the African American population. The locals and the slaves mixed, and they were all heavily influenced by French culture.
