Food and water were critical concerns for migrants families on the "Oregon Trail", food often took the form of hardtack (type of cracker made from flour & water), tea, baking soda, rice and beans were fundamental, and emigrants used to take 200£ of flour with 150£ of "salt pork"(salt-cured pork) 20£ of sugar and 10£ of salt with them.

Dried fruits and dried beans were also alternatives, altogether with wild animals hunting such as jackrabbit, prairie dog, coyote, marmot, fox and rattlesnake; plus wild berries and currants found along the trail were consumed to prevent diseases.
