Juan jogs each day from his house to a local park, and then he jogs back along the same route. On his way to the park, he averages 4 miles per hour. On his way home, he averages 6 miles per hour. If the total trip takes hours, which equation can be used to find x, the distance from Juan’s house to the park?

Answer:

x = 3.6 miles is the distance from home to park.

Explanation:

Let the distance be x

since speed for going to park is 4 mph

time taken =
(distance)/(speed) \\= (x)/(4)

likewise speed while returning to home is 6 mph

time taken on returning =
(distance)/(speed) \\= (x)/(6)

total time =
1(1)/(2)hours

(x)/(4) +(x)/(6) =(3)/(2)

(3x+2x)/(12)=(3)/(2)

(5x)/(12)=(3)/(2)

on solving ,we get

5x =18

x = 3.6 miles
