Water that collects on the surface on the ground,

OR
The top layer of a body of water.

Surface water is water that is on top of the land, not underground. Examples of surface water include rivers, lakes, oceans, streams, swamps, etc. These are all examples of surface water because they are found on the earth’s surface, rather than underground.
