The Varangians was the name given by Greeks and East Slavs for the tribes from north that between the 9th and 11th century rukled the medieval Kievan state. The territories of the East Slavs in the 9th century were divided between the Varangians and the Khazars. A group of Varangians known as the Russ settled in Novgorod in 862 under their leader Rurik. His relative Oleg conquered Kiev in 882 and established Kievan state, the cultural ancestor of today`s Russia, Belarus and Ukraine.
