Advantages

One is able to easily measure distance with the help of a linear scale
If the map is photographically enlarged/reduced, the scale is also enlarged/reduced in the same ratio and remains true to the map
Disadvantages

The scale can only be used by those who are familiar with the unit of measurement present on the map
It requires time and proficiency in creating a linear scale
