Alonzo Herndon was an African American barber (In 1878, he opened his first barbershop in Georgia) and entrepreneur, also the founder and president of an insurance company, Atlanta Life Insurance Company. He became Atlanta's wealthiest black citizen. His mother, Sophenie Herndon, was a slave, and his father, Frank Herndon was a white farmer. He died in 1927.
