I believe the answer is: d. Catholic Spain forced the Netherlands to convert to Catholicism and remain under Spanish rule.

While this happen, the protestant religion found its base in united Kingdom, Germany, and the Scandinavian. Since at that time the church had a really deep influence within the government, these countries involved in conflict because of their majority religion.
