I believe the answer is: developed a vaccine that virtually eliminated polio from American society.

Salk started the project to develop the vaccine in 1948, which funded by the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis. Since it's development, the vaccine is predicted to save the people from around $270 million worth of polio victim's medical treatment a year.
