Explain how a new leaf can grow with no trace of the original leaf

Regeneration. The original leaf is not needed because the DNA plan for the plant includes the information in the genes and chromosomes of what should be there: a leaf. There are undifferentiated cells, sort of like stem cells, that can become anything, like a leaf.
