The Arabs ; Hashmids had asked the British that if the British won they would gain Independence. After WWI the Ottoman Empire broke up but instead of common belief it was divided between France and Britain as mandates. Syria and Lebanon was given to France while Transjordan , Egypt and Palestine was given to Britain. The British allowed European Jews to settle in Palestine and this is why the area is so troubled today.
